YEREVAN, January 30. /ARKA/. Armenia is interested in opening the Abkhazian section of the railway and expects progress, Edward Nalbandian, Armenian foreign minister, said Monday summarizing the results of 2017.
Earlier, Russia’s Kommersant reported that representatives of Moscow and Tbilisi have decided to embark on implementation of the agreement signed between Russia and Georgia in 2011.
Armenian experts say this railroad will become a good alternative to Upper Lars motor road, the only ground transportation link between Armenia and Russia.
“We have repeatedly speak about our interest in this project, all the more as the opening of an alternative road is an important issue to our country, and have repeatedly discussed the matter with our Russian and Georgian partners,” Nalbandian said.
In his words, Russia and Georgia are now negotiating to open the Abkhazian section.
The minister said that the Georgian side has signed an agreement with a Swiss company, and it will be searching for a solution based on the agreement.
Russia, on its side, said that necessary procedures will be completed soon and the document will be signed.
“However, this is a very delicate negotiation process and if the parties had what to say they would present results,” he said. “When the process reaches its final stage, in which we are interested as well, it will become possible to present additional information.” --0---
