YEREVAN, October 3. /ARKA/. Armenia's anti-trust agency will conduct an inspection to find out if all local brandy producing companies procure grapes from the local grape growers, the head of the State Commission for the Protection of Economic Competition Gegham Gevorgyan told reporters today.
"We have grounds to say that there are some manifestations of unfair competition in the Armenian brandy market. The product must have all the standards, and first of all, it must be produced exclusively from Armenian grapes, which is a legal requirement," he said.
According to Gevorgyan, during the inspections, the regulator will pay attention to the compliance of the real amount of grapes purchased by a winery and the volume of brandy declared in tax returns.
He said if a mismatch between the real volumes of purchases and the declared amount of grapes at the stage of fermentation and distillation is revealed, the unscrupulous producer will be checked more thoroughly.
He also emphasized that to date, none of the producers has a dominant position in the market of Armenian brandy.
The anti-trust agency said during the inspections, stocks of more than 30 companies engaged in the production of brandy , as well as volumes of grape purchases and production capabilities, will be examined. Based on the results of inspections, the State Commission may come up with a legislative proposal. -0-
