Armenia’s mining industry and development of open-pit mines in January and February 2019 dropped by 7.3 percent from to the same period of 2018 to 45.2 billion drams at the end of the reporting period, according to the National Statistical Committee (NSC).
YEREVAN, April 12. /ARKA/. Armenia’s mining industry and development of open-pit mines in January and February 2019 dropped by 7.3 percent from to the same period of 2018 to 45.2 billion drams at the end of the reporting period, according to the National Statistical Committee (NSC).
NSC said the decline is due to a decrease in the metal ore mining. In the first two months of 2019, the extraction of metal ores decreased by 8.2% to 43.9 billion drams. The Amulsar gold mine, estimated to be the second in Armenia in terms of pure gold reserves, has been idle for six months already.
In 2018 July the Investigation Committee launched a criminal case into ‘intentional concealment of information on environmental pollution’ by officials of the Ministry of Nature Protection.
The decline in the extraction of metal ores affected the overall industrial output in Armenia. In the first two months of 2019, it grew by only 1.9% to 262.8 billion drams.
According to the 2018 data, the mining industry contributed to about 29% of GDP, a little down than in 2017. ($1 - 485.01 drams).-0-
