Armenia to deploy customs attaché at Upper Lars border crossing
YEREVAN, December 12. /ARKA/. The government of Armenia decided today to create a new diplomatic post of customs attaché to be deployed at the Armenian Embassy in Russia.

The head of the State Revenue Committee David Ananyan said the decision was prompted by a string of problems Armenian entrepreneurs encounter at the Upper Lars checkpoint on the Georgian-Russian border.

According to Ananyan, the bulk of these problems are created by Russian customs officers. He said also that the customs attaché's mission will be to help address all the problems of Armenian entrepreneurs that will be arising at the check point.

According to the proposed changes, the customs attaché will be appointed for a period of three years with the possibility of extension for one year. Persons holding senior positions in the customs service for at least a year can apply for this position. The residence of the attaché will be located in the city of Vladikavkaz, the capital of the Russian Republic of North Ossetia-Alania, not far from the border checkpoint.

The Upper Lars is the only overland conduit to the outside world for Armenian businesses. It is of utmost importance for Armenia, which is subjected to transportation blockade by Azerbaijan and Turkey.  Armenian exporters have been complaining for years that Russian customs officers create problems for transit of goods through the checkpoint. -0-
