YEREVAN, August 9. /ARKA/. Armenia’s agricultural processing companies are ready to procure this year 71,300 metric tons of fruits and vegetables, deputy minister of agriculture Robert Makaryan said today.

According to him, companies are willing to buy 48,000 tons of tomatoes, 6,472 tons of apples, 5,334 tons of peaches and 7,640 tons of apricots. He said this year’s demand is 35% (34,000 tons) is higher than the total amount of actual purchases in 2015.

"Despite early spring frosts and hail, the year for agriculture is quite good, however, final conclusions are still premature,' said Makaryan. According to him, wholesale buyers of tomato pay 33-35 drams per one kg.

The deputy minister said also Armenia plans to export up to 120,000 metric tons of fruits and vegetables. In his words, as of August 9, Armenian companies and farmers have exported 85,326 tons of fresh fruit and vegetables, up from 49,800 tons in the same period of 2015.

Makaryan said 85% of total exports of fruits and vegetables have gone to Russia (73,300 tons), 7, 4000 tons to Georgia, 4,500 tons to Belarus, 267 tons to Iraq and 60 tons to UAE.

According to the National Statistical Service, Armenia’s agricultural GDP in 2015 was worth over one trillion drams. ($ 1 - 476.14 drams). -- -0-
