Armenian daily tracks down the reason behind drop in prices of chocolate bars

An Armenian daily ‘Haykakan Zhamanak (Armenian Time) has noticed a sharp drop in the retail prices of chocolate bars Snickers, Twix, Mars, M&M's, KitKat and Bounty.
YEREVAN, October 21. / ARKA /. An Armenian daily ‘Haykakan Zhamanak (Armenian Time) has noticed a sharp drop in the retail prices of chocolate bars Snickers, Twix, Mars, M&M's, KitKat and Bounty.
For example, the price of a Snickers bar has dropped from 270 drams to 200 drams, and the price of a large Kit Kat bar has fallen from 350 drams to 300 drams.
The daily says it has interviewed shopkeepers who attributed the drop to the elimination of customs duties on goods imported from the Eurasian Economic Union’s member states, in particular from Russia. They also said the drop has triggered an increased demand for these chocolate bars.
The daily wonders why the price drop has occurred 10 months after Armenia’s accession to the Russia-led economic bloc. In fact, according to the newspaper, until recently a local company enjoyed monopoly on the imports of chocolate products, mentioned above.
"However, we have found out that about a month ago another company managed to" break "the monopoly, and now there is a competition between them. The result is a 10-20% drop in the prices of chocolate and a growing demand," it says.-0-
