Armenian electric energy market liberalization program to be upheld by government in May

The program with schedule of liberalization of Armenia’s electric energy market will be submitted to the government for approval before May 31, Hayk Badalyan, chief of the energy infrastructures and natural resources ministry’s division in change of energy, said Friday at the discussion of the program.

YEREVAN, April 21. /ARKA/. The program with schedule of liberalization of Armenia’s electric energy market will be submitted to the government for approval before May 31, Hayk Badalyan, chief of the energy infrastructures and natural resources ministry’s division in change of energy, said Friday at the discussion of the program. 

This program is being developed by the ministry in cooperation with USAID experts. 

The press office of the ministry said that the program implies a gradual liberalization of the country’s energy market and it is expected to be implemented within three or four years. 

It means transition from one model to another will be carried out with a gradual introduction of liberalization elements, an this is expected to have a positive effect on reduction of market participants’ expenses and the price-making process. 

Badalyan said that the idea of creation of a new energy market in Armenia has been prompted by needs of the domestic market and by its modernization as well as by the necessity of effective usage of opportunities of trade with Georgia.  

“Trans-border trade provides mutually beneficial opportunities and can enhance productivity of the domestic market,” he said. 

Badalyan said that favorable legislative environment is being created for liberalization of the electric energy market and development of inter-state trade. He also said that necessary preparations are being made for amending the law on energy.  

After receiving and summarizing all remarks and proposals, the final version will be submitted to the government before the end of May. -0----
