The Armenian government intends to tighten requirements for provision of a license for building a hydro power plant, Haykakan Zhamanak (Armenian Time) reported on Wednesday.
YEREVAN, September 19. /ARKA/. The Armenian government intends to tighten requirements for provision of a license for building a hydro power plant, Haykakan Zhamanak (Armenian Time) reported on Wednesday.
The intention is prompted by the environmental problems which emerged as a result of using rivers.
The government has submitted to the National Assembly a package of amendments to the law on water.
The amendments propose to prohibit construction of hydro power plants on rivers where endemic fish species or species mentioned in Red Book live.
According to the media source, there are many restrictions in the current law, and if the law has been respected before, many environment damaging hydro power plants would have not been built in the country. --0---
