Armenian government to raise cement import duty to protect local producers
YEREVAN, February 21. /ARKA/. The government of Armenia will protect local cement producers, Minister of Economic Development and Investments Tigran Khachatryan said at a Cabinet session today, when presenting a set of amendments to the law on State Duty.

He said as a result of a significant drop in prices of electricity in Armenia’s neighboring countries and state subsidies to cement  plants,  import of cement to Armenia has increased three times in the last 12 months.

Khachatryan said as a result, two local cement plants, which have capacity to produce 2 million tons of cement a year, cannot sell even one third of their products.

According to him, based on the results of a study into this industry a decision was made to protect local producers. In particular, it was decided to set the cement import duty at 22,000 drams per ton in order to bring the prices of imported cement in line with similar products sold in Armenia, produced by local plants. ($ 1 - 487.59 drams). --0--
