YEREVAN, March 23. /ARKA/. Over the past month, Armenian police officers have escorted some 459 trucks arriving from the neighboring Iran, Deputy Chief of Police Hayk Mheryan told a news conference today.
According to Mheryan, that was done to prevent the spread of coronavirus. The trucks headed to different regions of Armenia and the goal was to rule out contacts between Iranian truck drivers and Armenian citizens.
Mheryan said that police escort is carried out by groups (currently their number is 98) from one specified point to another, that is, from the border to the terminal.
"If necessary, we have instructions to start again escorting trucks from Iran,' Mheryan noted.
Earlier, the Armenian government extended until March 24, 2020 the temporary restriction on ground and air communications with Iran due to the spike in the number of coronavirus cases in that country Iran. In particular, only trucks with goods are allowed to enter Armenia.
In connection with the state of emergency declared by the government, Armenia has restricted the entry of citizens of some countries, including Iran, Georgia, Russia, USA and European countries.
On March 16 the government of Armenia delcared a 30-day state of emergency in a bid to stop the spread of the infection.
In Armenia, as of, March 23, 194 cases of coronavirus were confirmed.
Among those infected are Armenian citizens from Iran and Italy (residents of Yerevan, Echmiadzin, Meghri and Charentsavan), people who had contacted with them, as well as one Italian citizen and a visitor from France. Two patients who recovered from the coronavirus were discharged from the hospital. -0-
