YEREVAN, May 12. /ARKA/. There should be a continuous dialogue between representatives of the private sector and the Armenian government, former chairman of the SME Cooperation Association Hakob Avagyan said on Friday.

"We are taking a string of measures to convey the position of SMEs to the authorities," Avagyan said at the third annual congress of the association, which is a member of the Council on SMEs under the Prime Minister and the Council under the head of the State Revenues Committee.

Speaking about other tasks, Avagyan pointed out that the protection of SME’s interests should be brought to the institutional level.  He welcomed the government’s idea to establish Business Ombudsman, ‘which means that an independent body will operate in Armenia, to which SMEs can apply in case of problems."

The gathering elected Artak Manukyan as new chairman of the association. He will hold this post until 2020. The SME Cooperation Association was founded in 2014 and currently has 620 members.

According to official data, there are about 70,000 SMEs in Armenia, including 58,000 micro and small businesses, and 10,000 medium-sized businesses.

Small and medium businesses accounted for about 80-90% of the total number of active taxpayers in 2016. Their share in the country's GDP has remained at 26-27% for the last three years. -0-
