YEREVAN, February 18. /ARKA/. The Armenian government on Thursday approved a set of legislative amendments designed to stimulate production of grape vodka, deputy minister of agriculture Grisha Baghyan said. According to him, under the current law the cost of a 12-month license for the production of grape vodka is 15 million drams.
He said because of this high cost no grape vodka was actually produced in the country, although small amount of grape vodka is required to be added to some types of wines. Due to lack of grape vodka it is often replaced by wheat vodka which is prohibited by the laws in Russia and the EU.
Baghyan said the proposed amendments call for the reduction of the cost of permission to 50,000 drams (about $100). He said producers will have to only notify about it. He added that the changes, after they are approved by the parliament, will bolster the procumbent of certain varieties of grapes suitable for the production of grape vodka, which are not used for the production of wine or brandy. He said grape vodka has a great export potential.
According to the National Statistical Service, production of brandy in Armenia in 2015 decreased by 9.4% from the previous year to about 17 million liters, while production of wine decreased by 4% to about 6 million liters and production of vodka fell by 1.6% to about 9.4 million liters.
According to the NSS, exports of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages make 12% in total Armenian exports. Of that percentage exports of wine and champagne account for only 0.41%. ($1 – 495.88 drams). --0--
