Grape procurements by Armenian wineries up 40,000 metric tons in 2019 to 165,000 tons

Grape procurements by Armenian wineries and canneries in 2019 have grown  by 40,000 metric tons from 2018 reaching 165,000 tons, Deputy Economy Minister Artak Kamalyan told reporters on Tuesday.

YEREVAN, December 24. /ARKA/. Grape procurements by Armenian wineries and canneries in 2019 have grown  by 40,000 metric tons from 2018 reaching 165,000 tons, Deputy Economy Minister Artak Kamalyan told reporters on Tuesday.

According to him, this year there were no problems with the purchase of grapes, and the average  price amounted to 160 drams per 1 kg of grapes used for production of brandy and 180-250 drams for grapes used for production of wine.

He said next year, the grape procurement strategy will be revised and new pricing mechanisms will be in place for purchase of grapes and milk.

Regarding the phylloxera  problem, the deputy minister said 2 hectares of wine yards  with planted with phylloxera-resistant vines  as part of a pilot program. He said  the ministry expects a “road map”  from international colleagues to implement next measures to combat the disease.

The Deputy Minister emphasized that this type of vine disease is registered in almost all regions of Armenia, with the exception of Vayots Dzor.

"We have already held negotiations with donors, who will provide us with vines resistant to phylloxera in the next 4-5 years," Kamalyan said. –0--
