YEREVAN March 2. /ARKA/. A good harvest of fruits and vegetables is expected this year, however, these hopes may be thwarted by snaps of cold in March and early April, Hrach Berberyan, the head of the Agrarian and Peasant Union, said today.

"In late March, mother nature always presents us with surprises. If this happens, then we will lose the crop,' he told reporters on Wednesday.

Nevertheless, he said, the year started off well, taking into account the abundant snowfall in winter. He also urged local authorities to speed up the distribution of pesticides to farmers to fight crop pests, including rodents - especially in Shirak and Syunik regions.

Gagik Surenyan, the deputy chief of a National Weather Service department, said on March 1 that another big warmup is expected in Armenia in the coming days. According to him, warm air masses are approaching Armenia from Iraq and in the next week or so the entire territory of the country will be under the influence of these masses.

He also said he could say with certainty that in the next ten days no sharp drop in temperature, heavy snowfall and frost are expected. -0-
