YEREVAN, November 15. /ARKA/. It has been a long time now since Iran stopped importing mutton from Armenia, according to the article published in Hraparak newspaper.
“The reason is that the national currency of Iran has devalued against the USD. As a result, it is not beneficial for the Iranian entrepreneurs to exchange their money into USD to buy rams in Armenia,” the source implies.
However, according to the article, it is good for the Armenian consumers, as a kilo of lamb costs now 2,000 drams instead of the previous 3,500 drams. Armenia also exports the lamb to the United Arab Emirates.
The income of the Armenian farmers from lamb export is nearly 4-5 billion drams annually.
Armenia started exporting mutton in 2008. At that time 12,600 sheep and goats were exported. Iran imports directly from the farms. Export volumes are nearly 150,000 heads. -0-
