YEREVAN, January 13. /ARKA/. More than 189,000 vehicles were imported to Armenia in 2019, up from 64,000 vehicles, imported a year earlier, David Ananyan, the head of the State Revenue Committee, said at a press conference on Monday.
He said the import of as many as 189,000 vehicles generated about 95 billion drams in customs duties, by 58 billion drams more than in 2018.
He also said that the car customs clearance office relocated to the second-largest town of Gyumri late last year managed to handle all the customers.
According to Ananyan, a certain level of car import will continue, however, the business-oriented activities of some citizens will not continue at the same extent, since this is not economically profitable any longer because of the saturated market.
One of the customs privileges enjoyed by Armenian citizens ceased to be effective on January 1, 2020. Unlike other members of the Eurasian Economic Union (EEU), Armenia enjoyed a preferential regime until December 31, 2019 due to which the customs rates on car imports were significantly lower than those in the Eurasian Economic Union.
As of September 1, 2019, the customs rate for vehicles imported from third countries to Armenia was 10 euros per 1 cubic cm of engine capacity, while in Russia and other EEU countries it was 22 euros. Starting January 1, a similar rate applies to Armenia as well. ($1 – 479.26 drams). -0-
