YEREVAN, July 8. /ARKA/. No negotiations are being held to sell the Electric Networks of Armenia, Natalia Sarjanyan, the press secretary of the cokpany, told journalists on Wednesday.
Commenting on the statement made by Boris Kovalchuk, the head of Russia's INTER RAO UES energy holding (the sole owner of the Electric Networks of Armenia), she said it was general in nature.
«Kovalchuk said nothing more than that INTER RAO UES is ready to purchase and sell any asset at an appropriate price,» she said. «No negotiations are being held over the Electric Networks of Armenia particularly.»
Sarjanyan also denied rumors going around that Evgeny Bibin, CEO of the Electric Networks, will be dismissed from his post.
Talk about possible sale of the company started after the Public Services Regulatory Commission decided on June 17 to increase the electricity price for consumers by 6.93 drams (16.7%).
The decision sparked a vigorous public backlash in the country and Armenian citizens took to the streets in a protest against the increase. They blocked Baghramyan Avenue in Yerevan, and the police dispersed the protesters.
After that, the peaceful protest resumed with renewed vigor despite Serzh Sargsyan’s statement that the burden created by the new price will be borne by the government until completion of the audit that was arranged at Sargsyan’s meeting with Maksim Sokolov, Russia’s transport minister.
The Electricity Networks of Armenia, a 100% subsidiary of Russian INTER RAO UES, enjoys the sole right of electric power distribution in Armenia. ---0----
