YEREVAN, June 28, /ARKA/. Edgar Jagaryan, a nominee for the position of a member of Armenian State Commission for the Protection of Economic Competition (SCPEC) told the parliament today that personally he had nothing against the companies which dominate the local market.
In his words, these companies have become dominating because of a string of factors. ‘A business person achieved success in this business and eventually became dominant. But such companies should be under the daily control of SCPEC so that they do not try to abuse their dominating position," the nominee said.
He said all manifestations of unfair competition should be excluded, including through joint work with other government bodies.
Jagaryan was a little confused when he was asked about the dominant position of the Zvartnots airport which results in high prices for its services. He agreed that prices of Zvartnots are indeed high.
‘I believe that the development of the second Shirak airport in Gyumri should play a big role in price reduction,” he said, noting that he does not have enough information about the situation in this area.
When reminded by a lawmaker Arman Babajanyan form the opposition Bright Armenia party that the airport in Gyumri is operated by the same company that manages Zvartnots airport and therefore there is no competition between them, the candidate said he did not know about it.
Zvartnots and Shirak airports are run by the Armenia – International Airports in accordance with a 30-year concessional management agreement sealed with Armenian government. The company belongs to American International Airports, an Argentine company owned by Eduardo Eurnekian, an Argentine entrepreneur of Armenian descent. -0---
