Pashinyan: transition to slaughtering livestock in slaughterhouses is a matter of country's image
YEREVAN, January 22. /ARKA/. Transition to slaughtering livestock in slaughterhouses only is a matter of the country's image, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said on Wednesday during a Q&A session in the parliament.

On January 15 it became obligatory that all animals be slaughtered exclusively at slaughterhouses.  The decision caused discontent of some meat merchants and cattle breeders who protested for several days in front of the government and blocked also roads across the country.

"Should we switch to slaughterhouses? Definitely yes, because in addition to health problems, it is a matter of the country's image. Do our citizens who express dissatisfaction have convincing counterarguments?" the prime minister asked, agreeing that the number of slaughterhouses in the country is not enough.

He said the government should take steps towards solving this problem and by February 6 it will consider the possibility of creating favorable conditions for the construction of new slaughterhouses and the acquisition of necessary equipment.

He said also that the government, together with the governors and the State Food Safety Service, will develop a preferential map of slaughterhouses. In his words, only those projects that will embrace as many communities as possible and provide wider access to slaughterhouse will get  financing.

Pashinyan said the government is ready to leave the situation in the regions as it is now until July 1, provided that starting July 2 this issue will no longer be raised. -0-
