Some $2 million being spent on modernization of Shirak airport
YEREVAN, September 22. /ARKA/. Some $2 million will have been invested in the modernization of the Shirak airport in Armenia’s second-largest town of Gyumri in 2017, Sergey Avetisyan, the chairman of the Civil Aviation Department of Armenia, stated at a press conference on Friday.

He said the money is being used to build a warehouse for equipment, a new boiler room and  a heating system. He added that the windows in the passenger terminal will be replaced too.

According to Avetisyan, the airport is becoming more attractive to  various airlines. "Since the resumption of the  operation, the airport has handled 56 thousand passengers. In August alone it handled 12 thousand people. The airlines are not redirecting flights from Yerevan to Gyumri, but are opening new routes, which naturally increases the total passenger flow, "he said.

At the same time, according to Avetisyan, Shirak is not ready yet for cargo transportation due to lack of corresponding facilities. "If need arises to equip the airport  for cargo transportation, we will work  in that direction ," he said.

Currently Armenia has two operating airports – Zvartnots in Yerevan and Shirak in Gyumri, both run by Armenia - International Airports company in accordance with the 30-year concession management agreement signed with the Armenian government in 2001.

Armenia - International Airports is owned by Eduardo Eurnekian, an Argentine entrepreneur of Armenian descent. --0---
