South Caucasus Railways reports 6.7 percent increase in cargo transportation

The Russian-owned South Caucasus Railways company, operating Armenia’s railroads, said today it transported 3,269,400 tons of cargoes last year, a 6.7% year-on-year growth.

YEREVAN, January 20. /ARKA/. The Russian-owned South Caucasus Railways company, operating Armenia’s railroads, said today it transported 3,269,400 tons of cargoes last year, a 6.7% year-on-year growth. According to a company’s press release, sent to ARKA, the actual volume of railroading was 9.6% higher than projected for the year.

The company said it transported outside the country 449,800 metric tons of goods, a 32% year-on-year rise and brought to the country 1,351,100 tons of cargo, by 5.2% less from a year earlier. The volume of domestically transported cargo grew by 13.3. % to 1,468,500 metric tons.  

"The South Caucasus Railways is gradually increasing its performance indicators, including the volume of freight. These results were due to introduction of a flexible tariff policy aimed at reducing transport costs," the press release says. 

South Caucasus Railways, a 100-percent subsidiary of Russian Railways, runs Armenian Railway.  Armenian Railways was handed over to the South Caucasus Railways on February 13, 2008 for 30-year concession management with a right to prolong the management term for other 10 years. –0-
