YEREVAN, January 10. /ARKA/. Citing their peers in Georgia Armenian emergency authorities said the Upper Lars border crossing on Georgia’s border with Russia was reopened for all types of vehicles today afternoon except for heavy trucks. Georgian emergency officials had earlier closed it for all types of vehicles because of a threat of avalanche.
Upper Lars border crossing is the only overland route connecting Armenia with Russia. In winter, it is often closed because of the threat of avalanches. In spring and autumn the road is shut down by the threat of mudslides.
The Vardenyats mountain pass in Armenia’s Gegharkunik region was also reopened for traffic at 14:30 today, the emergency ministry said, warning, however, that this road is icy on some sections.
The ministry also said no precipitation is expected on January 12 across the country, but weak precipitation is expected in Lori, Tavush, Syunik regions and Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh) on January 10-11. It also urged motorists to use winter tires when traveling to these areas. -0-
