YEREVAN, February 10. /ARKA/. The Water Atlas of Armenia will be released in the next 2-3 years, according to Magda Avetisyan, the coordinator of a USAID-supported Advanced Science and Partnerships for Integrated Resource Development (ASPIRED) project, designed to support sustainable water resource management and sustainable practices of water use through the use of science, technology, innovation and partnerships (STIP) approaches.

The goal is to reduce the rate of groundwater extraction in the Ararat Valley to sustainable levels.

Speaking at a news conference today, Ms. Avetisyan said as part of the project an inventory of all water resources, including artesian wells in the Ararat Valley of the country will be made.

She said also an experimental fish farm will be built in the Ararat Valley to test a variety of indoor and outdoor water use technologies, as well as use of renewable energy to improve the productivity of fish farms, breeding of new species of fish and aquatic invertebrates. She added that some fish farms may be remodeled as greenhouses or poultry farms.

A recent USAID-funded  study, managed by Clean Energy and Water Program (CEWP),  revealed that over the last 6-8 years, the level of groundwater resources in the Ararat Valley that has the bulk of fish farms, has significantly decreased, leaving over 30 communities without reliable access to potable and/or irrigation water. -0-
