Parliament chairman says strengthening economy major priority

Armenian parliament chairman Hovik Abrahamian told journalists Monday that strengthening the economy was a priority of the authorities.
YEREVAN, February 8, /ARKA/. Armenian parliament chairman Hovik Abrahamian told journalists Monday that strengthening the economy was a priority of the authorities.

‘I think that our major priority now is to strengthen the economy and boost economic growth. The president, the parliament and the government are doing everything to strengthen the economy,’ he said.

The parliament chairman said other priorities were the peaceful settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict and pro-active foreign policy. He said these issues are more important now than discussions on setting up a bicameral parliament. He said this idea needs a careful consideration.

The idea was first voiced by Armenian Diaspora minister Hranush Hakobian during a last week meeting with members of the Armenian community in California, USA.

She said president Sargsyan intends to propose changes to the Constitution to allow establishment of a bicameral parliament. Seats in the proposed upper chamber are to be distributed among Diaspora representatives. -0-
