YEREVAN, December 5. /ARKA/. Some 60 of 150 Armenian large dump trucks, which had been trapped at Upper Lars checkpoint on the Russian-Georgian border for more than a week because of heavy snowfalls, eventually moved from Russia to Georgia on Saturday, and other 20 will cross the checkpoint today, Armenian transport ministry’s press office reported on Monday.
Referring to Georgia’s road department, the Armenian ministry reports that traffic on Gudauri-Kobi section of Mtskheta-Stepantsminda-Lars road is prohibited for trailers, semi-trailers and buses with more than 30 seats.
Other vehicles are permitted here, but only if they have slip-resistant tracks.
They will move through tunnels, which shields them from avalanches. Other sections of the road are open.
Armenia’s transport ministry has sent special haulage trucks to help Armenian trucks.
Armenian and Georgian experts are now discussing ways to solve the problem.
The Armenian ministry urges drivers to travel through Upper Lars only after receiving official information about the state of the road from the ministry’s official website.
Kazbegi - Upper Lars, the only ground crossing on Georgia-Russia border, has stood dysfunctional for three years. It has been closed by Russia for repair and modernization.
It resumed operating on March 1, 2010 and opened for all types of vehicles on May 22, 2010.
The border checkpoint is able to serve up to 7,000 people, 50 buses and 500 cars every day.
The Upper Lars border checkpoint serves the only direct ground transportation link between Armenia, which is blockaded by Azerbaijan and Turkey, and Russia.
This checkpoint plays a very important role in Armenia’s economic relations with other countries. --0--
