Armenia’s butter production down 38 percent in 10 months

Butter production in Armenia slashed by 37.7% in the first 10 months of 2017 from the year before to 244.8 tons, according to the National Statistical Service (NSS).

YEREVAN, December 5. /ARKA/. Butter production in Armenia slashed by 37.7% in the first 10 months of 2017 from the year before to 244.8 tons, according to the National Statistical Service (NSS). According to the customs service, butter imports in the first half of 2017 declined by 8.6% to 2,300 tons worth $10.1 million, by 10.4% more from the year before. Some 61.2% or 1,440 tons were imported from New Zealand, a decrease of 17.4%.
Butter prices have risen sharply in the past few months because of rising international prices, problems in agriculture and butter production in Armenia. In addition, from January 1, 2018, butter prices are expected to grow further because of higher customs duties becoming, effective for the Eurasian Economic Union.
According to the National Statistical Service, butter prices in October this year increased by 33.3% from the year before and by 12.3% from the previous month.
Production of some other dairy products also declined in the first 10 months. For example, cheese production decreased by 16.9% to 16,500 tons, sour cream production slashed by 20.1% to 3,900 tons, cottage cheese output fell by 12% to 721.9 tons, production of matzoni (Armenian yogurt) dropped by 0.4% to 5,100 tons. At the same time milk production increased by 0.5% to 427.7 million liters, and production of kefir increased by 11.4% to 432.4 tons. -0-
