Armenia’s mining industry grows 31 percent in four months

Armenia’s mining industry (including development of open-pit mines) saw a 30.9% rise in January-April 2015 from the year before amounting to 75.7 billion drams, according to the latest data from the National Statistical Service (NSS).

YEREVAN, June 1. / ARKA / Armenia’s mining industry (including development of open-pit mines) saw a 30.9% rise in January-April 2015 from the year before amounting to 75.7 billion drams, according to the latest data from the National Statistical Service (NSS).
The major contribution of 98.9% worth 74.9 billion drams was made by the mining of metal ores. It was 31.5% higher from the year before.
Exports of mining products accounted for 35.7% of all exports. In January-April 2015 they increased by 9.6% to about $134.4 million. The growth was enhanced by the launch of the Teghut copper-molybdenum mine in Lori region in late 2014. It is the second largest in Armenia after the Kajaran mines.
Together they are said to comprise about 7% of the world reserves of molybdenum.
According to the National Statistical Service, industrial output accounted for 28.4% of the GDP in 2014, while the mining industry accounted for 4.2%. Mining products are the main item of Armenian exports. The mining sector is also the second in Armenia in terms of salaries which in March 2015 were 374,078 drams (gross). The mining industry employs more than 5,000 people.
The total industrial production in January-April 2015 grew by 4.2% year-on-year to 393.1 billion drams. Manufacturing accounted for 234.5 billion drams (a growth of 1.1%), supplies of electricity, gas, steam and conditioned air declined by 8.1% to 76.3 billion drams, while supplies of water, water purification and waste treatment grew by 9.7% to 6.4 billion drams.
