YEREVAN, December 5. / ARKA /. Tomato output in Armenia this year has contracted by approximately 5000 tons from 2012 to 260,000 tons, a deputy minister of agriculture, Garnik Petrosyan, told a news conference today.

He said the decrease was due to damage caused by tomato moth. He said this in mind the ministry will take measures next year to restore and increase production of this crop.

"Much will depend on farmers, who should be ready to follow the advice of experts,” he said.
Petrosyan noted with regret that many farmers often ignore the warnings of experts refusing to promptly take necessary measures to prevent the spread of tomato moth.

According to official data of the ministry, the procurement of tomato this year by canneries has fallen to 13,324 tons from 26,229 tons last year this time. -0-
