Everybody to have home in Armenia’s earthquake zone in two years - minister

The housing problem in the 1988 Spitak earthquake zone is to be completely solved within two years, Armenia’s minister of urban planning Narek Sargsyan said at an international conference on capacity building in town planning, housing, energy efficiency and disaster risk reduction on Monday.

YEREVAN, October 13. /ARKA/. The housing problem in the 1988 Spitak earthquake zone is to be completely solved within two years, Armenia’s minister of urban planning Narek Sargsyan said at an international conference on capacity building in town planning, housing, energy efficiency and disaster risk reduction on Monday.
The urban planning ministry carried out intense town planning works in the recent years, in the earthquake zone in particular, Sargsyan said.
The ministry also initiates law amendments to ensure seismic resistance of buildings and up-to-standard design and construction works.
The devastating earthquake that jolted the north of Armenia on December 7, 1988, almost ruined Spitak and Giumry cities and a hundred of villages and left, according to the official information, 25,000 killed, 140,000 disabled and a half a million homeless. –0--
