Farmers must have representative in government: NGO chairman says
YEREVAN, March 14. /ARKA/. Armenian farmers must have a representative in the government, Hrach Berberian, chairman of the Agricultural Association of Armenia, told a news conference today.

"People engaged in agriculture should have a representative in the government who will represent and defend their interests", he argued.
He said there are many instances when government decisions are not fully implemented by local self-management bodies. More specifically, he said a sack of fertilizer, brought in by the government, was sold to farmers at 6,500 drams, by 500 drams more than the government-set price.

He said the government should punish heads of those communities who demanded a higher price for a sack of fertilizer.

Berberian also praised a government decision to subsidize part of the cost of diesel fuel cost for farmers. The goal of this plan is to make diesel fuel available to farmers in all communities. As a result, one liter of diesel fuel will be sold to farmers at 350 drams, by 90 drams cheaper than the market price.

Under a government decision, Armenia will have imported this year about 30,000 tons of fertilizers from Russia Iran and Georgia. -0-
