YEREVAN, November 12. / ARKA /. David Shahnazarian , the head of Yerevan-based Center for Political and Legal Studies Concord, described Armenia’s decision to join the Russia-led Customs Union as running counter to civilization.
Mr. Shahnazarian, who served as head of the Ministry of National Security under Armenia’s first post-Soviet president Levon Ter-Petrosian, said a look at the situation with human rights and civil liberties in Russia, Kazakhstan and Belarus, the current three members of the Customs Union, is enough to make sure that Armenia is a few steps ahead of them, while a membership in this alliance would bring Armenia down in terms of human rights.
Speaking today at a seminar on "Customs Union: Armenia's Security Challenges, " Mr. Shahnazarian said neither the Customs Union nor its members are guided by any system of values.
"It is extremely puzzling that the Russian propaganda machine began a Soviet-styled crusade not only against the European Union, but also against the European system of values,” he added. -0-
