French Foreign Minister visited Vedi reservoir, built in Armenia with funds from French Development Agency

YEREVAN, September 16 /ARKA/.  French Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs Stéphane Sejourné and Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan visited on Sunday the Vedi reservoir, which is being built with a loan from the French Development Agency and co-financed by the Armenian Government, reported the press service of the Armenian Foreign Ministry.

The ministers got acquainted with the progress of the reservoir construction and emphasized the strategic importance of the project in the context of strengthening Armenia's resilience.

“The partnership between Armenia and France is actively developing in all areas, and here we are witnessing one of its very specific, tangible results,” noted Mirzoyan. 

Significant positive impacts of the project on the economic development of the community, the attraction of additional water resources and increased efficiency of their management, improved water supply to irrigated lands, as well as on the environment and tourism were noted during the visit.

In August of this year, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan stated that the Vedi reservoir construction project, estimated at 90 million euros, would be completed this year.

The Vedi reservoir with a capacity of 29.4 million cubic meters is being built on the right bank of the Vedi River in the Ararat region of Armenia. The project is more than 80% financed by the French Development Agency.

With the launch of the reservoir, uninterrupted irrigation of about 3,220 hectares of land with 5,000 beneficiaries will be ensured. Thanks to the transition from mechanical irrigation to gravity, about 19 million kWh of electricity will be saved per year, and the need to take water from Lake Sevan for irrigation purposes will be reduced by 18 million cubic meters.
