North-South road may turn into a highly sought-after international corridor - Putin
YEREVAN, 5 June 6. /ARKA/. The shipment of cargoes along the North-South route will allow reducing the transportation time from St. Petersburg to the Persian Gulf countries by 10 days, Russian President Vladimir Putin said Wednesday at a meeting with heads of world news agencies.
"As for this North-South road, it can turn into a very good and demanded international corridor, when cargoes from here directly, from the port of St. Petersburg, will go through the entire European part to Azerbaijan, then to Iran and with access to the Persian Gulf coast. It is almost 10 days faster than through the Suez Canal,’ Russian Tass news agency quoted Putin as saying.
The North-South transport corridor, crossing the territory of Armenia along the Meghri-Kapan-Goris-Yerevan-Ashtarak-Gyumri-Bavra route, adjoins the Georgian road from the south leading to the ports of Poti and Batumi (on the Black Sea) and further to Russia, CIS countries and the European Union. This integrated project is suipposed to improve Europe-Caucasus-Asia traffic in the West Asia-Eastern Europe connection zone. -0-
