YEREVAN, February 13. /ARKA/. Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, at a discussion of the government’s five-year activity program on Wednesday in the National Assembly, called Armenia’s export growth in 2018 revolutionary.

He said that the program performance is assessed with particular indicators – poverty rate, unemployment, the ratio of taxes to GDP, export volumes and economic growth.

“It can be placed on record that the export growth [7.8% in 2018 - ARKA] is already revolutionary, since it is ensured amid significant decrease of the mining industry’s output,” the premier said.
In his words, Teghut field was closed yet in February 2018, and the government has managed ensure the growth of exports even in such circumstances.

More than that, he said, some segments of the economy enjoyed significant growth. For example, the export of textile grew 65.4%, shoe-, hat- and umbrella-producing industry accounted for a 58% growth etc.

“If we manage to retain such paces in these areas, we will place it on record that we have reached the economic stage of the revolution,” Pashinyan said. “Obvious is that that there are conditions for retaining them, since large investments are being made in the textile and leather-processing industries. We expect creation of thousands of jobs.”

Besides, he said, new jobs are expected to be created also for construction of the new Yerevan Thermal Power Plant by RENCO and Siemens companies as well as the companies that received preferences from the government.

The prime minister said that the government has provided preferences for the import of raw materials and equipment under investment programs. The total amount is $440 million.
Other investment programs are being discussed by the government now.

“If at least 70% of these programs are implemented, this will produce significant changes already in 2019,” he said.

According to the National Statistical Committee, Armenia’s foreign trade turnover amounted to $7 375.16 million in 2018 (16.4% growth). Exports totaled $2 411.9 million here (7.8% growth) and imports $4 963.2 million (21.1% growth). -0--
