YEREVAN, May 22. /ARKA/. The reelection of Hassan Rouhani as president of Iran opens up a new opportunity for Armenia to implement its joint projects with the southern neighbor without delay, an expert in Iranian affairs, Vardan Voskanyan said today.
"The energy sector, which is the driving force behind the bilateral relations is successfully developing. The construction of the third high-voltage power line for electricity swaps is underway. As a result Iran will increase the amount of natural gas shipped to Armenia," Voskanyan said.
Today, Armenia receives from Iran about 365-370 million cubic meters of gas per year, which is converted to electricity and is shipped back to Iran. Earlier it was reported that Iran would triple gas exports to Armenia by 2019 and would also export gas to Georgia via Armenia. The construction of 400-kilovolt power line stretching from Iran to Armenia and further to Georgia will allow synchronizing the operation of the energy systems of these three countries and Russia.
Voskanyan recalled that during a visit to Armenia in 2016 December, Rouhani said that Iran regards Armenia as the most important country of a project designed to link the Persian Gulf to the Black Sea.
‘This is why we must finish the construction of the North-South highway as soon as possible," Voskanyan said.
According to Voskanyan, Armenia should work to enhance cooperation with Georgia, Russia, and also Turkmenistan to advance the quadrilateral cooperation. "Such formats allow Armenia to increase its role in the region, he added.
He also said bilateral work is being carried out to strengthen the Armenian-Iranian relations in the sectors of customs, agriculture and in the creation of a free trade zone.
Rouhani was re-elected President of Iran scoring 57% of votes in May 20 election. According to Iranian Interior Ministry, Rouhani obtained 23,549,616 votes out of the total 41,220,131, while his rival Ebrahim Raeisi, received 15,786,449 votes. -0-
