YEREVAN, May 15. /ARKA/. The number of small hydropower plants operating in Armenia will be increased to 207, and their total capacity will reach 467 MW, the Chairman of the Public Services Regulatory Commission (PSRC) Mesrop Mesropyan told lawmakers, presenting a report on the activities of the agency in 2024.

"The development of renewable energy and, thanks to it, increasing the energy security of the country has always been and is of key importance for the Commission. As of December 31, 2024, some 191 small hydropower plants were operating in Armenia, and 16 more were under construction. After the launch of the hydropower plants under construction, 207 small hydropower plants with a total capacity of 467 MW will operate," Mesropyan said.

Regarding solar energy, he informed that 72 solar power plants were operating, and another 47 are under construction. Moreover, the permission to operate the Masrik-1 station was granted by the Public Services Regulatory Commission on May 14, 2025.

"After the launch of solar power plants under construction, their number will be 119, and the total capacity will be 577 MW," Mesropyan said, adding that the above figures apply to licensed electricity producers.

"Meanwhile, for reasons of developing renewable energy and increasing the level of energy security of the country, the importance of autonomous energy generation in Armenia is increasing from year to year. As of the end of 2024, the number of entities in this sector reached 31,249, and their total capacity reached 420 MW. We are talking about solar panels installed on the roofs of houses, not industrial manufacturers. The capacity in this sector grows by 15 MW annually," the head of the regulator informed.

According to Armstat, in 2024, electricity generation in the country exceeded 9.38 billion kWh (6.5% more than in 2023). The largest contribution  - 37.5%, belonged to  thermal power plants. It was followed by the Armenian Nuclear Power Plant - 30.2%, hydroelectric power plants - 21.9%. Another 10.4% of production came from solar power plants, and 0.02% from wind power plants. -0-
