The death toll from a fireworks storage explosion at Surmalu shopping center in Armenia’s capital Yerevan on Sunday has risen to 16, the Ministry of Emergencies said Tuesday.

YEREVAN, August 16. /ARKA/. The death toll from a fireworks storage explosion at Surmalu shopping center in Armenia’s capital Yerevan on Sunday has risen to 16, the Ministry of Emergencies said Tuesday.

Emergencies Minister Armen Pambukhchyan said the bodies of another 8 people, including a pregnant woman and a child, were recovered from under the rubble. The identity of six of the dead was established, he said.

Another 18 people remain missing according to the updated list of people who are unaccounted for after the explosion.

Most of at least 61 people who were injured were discharged form hospitals, according to the health ministry.

The explosion led to the collapse of part of the three-story building that housed fireworks unit. Officials have not yet provided information about what caused the fireworks to ignite, but the emergency minister ruled out a terror attack. -0-
