Seven persons taken in police custody in Georgia for suspected attempt to blow up gas pipeline to Armenia

Seven persons suspected of plotting to blow up an open section of the gas pipeline that conveys natural gas from Russia to Armenia were arrested Saturday in Georgia, near Saguramo village, 20 kilometers from Tbilisi.
YEREVAN, August 22. /ARKA/. Seven persons suspected of plotting to blow up an open section of the gas pipeline that conveys natural gas from Russia to Armenia were arrested Saturday in Georgia, near Saguramo village, 20 kilometers from Tbilisi.
A representative of Georgia’s national security service is quoted by Novosti-Armenia as saying Monday at a briefing that five Georgian citizens have been detained for possessing fire arms, armament and explosives for committing a terrorist act.
Another citizen, who didn’t informed the police about preparations for the crime, and a patrol police service officer were taken in police custody as well.
It has become known from the briefing that an arms cache with three automatic guns and explosives has been found near the motor road. There was also a map.
The national security representative said one of the malefactors had frequently traveled to Ukraine, but there is no information showing that the group had been run from this country.
Russia’s natural gas is conveyed to Armenia through Georgia’s territory.
The sole importer and distributor of Russian natural gas in Armenia is Gazprom Armenia, a subsidiary of Russia’s Gazprom. --0---
