YEREVAN, June 24. /ARKA/. A senior member of the opposition Armenian Revolutionary Federation/Dashnaktsutyun (ARF) party, praised today president’s Serzh Sargsyan statement at the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) session on June 22, saying overall it was positive, except for some aspects.

Speaking at a news conference, Armen Rustamian, representative of the ARF Supreme Body and chairman of a parliamentary committee on foreign relations, said he could not agree with the president's statement that Armenian authorities were conducting an effective anti-corruption struggle. ‘There is no anti-corruption struggle at all," Rustamian said.

He said he did not either share Sargsyan’s confidence that the new electoral code reflects the Armenian authorities will to conduct "normal elections."

"If it were so, our proposals for the Election Code would not have been rejected. However, I appreciate that part of his statement in which the president said the society, not the government, should decide whether elections are fair or not," he said.

Rustamian also noted shortcomings in that part of the statement relating to the Karabakh conflict. He disagreed with Sargsyan’s remark that Armenophobia in Azerbaijan gives it an advantage in a possible war. –0-
