YEREVAN, October 2. /ARKA/. Armenia urges PACE to discuss the derailing of visits of international missions to South Caucasus and Nagorno-Karabakh by Azerbaijan, the Press Service of the Armenian Parliament reported.

According to the press release, in his meeting with CE Secretary General Thierry Davis the Head of the Armenian delegation in PACE David Harutiunian stressed the fact that the Azerbaijani side regularly derails the visits of the international missions to the region, particularly the visit of the PACE representatives, experts of CE on fact-finding concerning the state of historical and cultural monuments of Old Jugha in Nakhichevan.

Harutiunian also pointed out the derailing of the visits of PACE missions, particularly the visit of the reporter of PACE sub-committee for culture Edward O’Hara to South Caucasus and Nagorno-Karabakh, as well as the deranging of the visits of PACE Bureau interim commissions on Nagorno Karabakh due to the last-minute pre-conditions placed by Azerbaijan.

Harutiunian proposed to the Head of PACE to inform the PACE Bureau and to apply to CE Ministers Committee and the Secretary General to take appropriate measures for implementation of CE missions.

With the connivance of the Azerbaijani authorities, 3,500 khachkars (cross-stones) of 10,000 preserved by 2005 were ruined at the Armenian cemetery of Old Jugha, which is turned into a military ground.

Armenia initiated visits to the region within the PACE, European Parliament and UNESCO for protection of the monuments. The visit of PACE mission to the region to assess the state of cultural monuments had been recurrently postponed and was finally to be held in the beginning of September. But it was cancelled due to non-constructive approach of the Azerbaijani side. N.V. –0--
