YEREVAN, August 20. /ARKA/. Adoption of a new constitution by Turkey and liberalization of some laws relating to national minorities may contribute to the broadening of the rights of the Armenian community and improvement of its condition, according to Vahram Ter-Matevosian, a senior researcher at the Institute of Oriental Studies of the National Academy of Sciences of Armenia.
Turkey is currently developing a new constitution that is to be submitted to the parliament in 2013 spring, he said.
He said this past February a sub-commission, engaged in the development of the new constitution, met with representatives of the Armenian community, listened to their problems and demands and promised that they would be reflected in the draft constitution.
According to Ter-Matevosyan, the sub-commission was transparent and the Armenian community hopes that some progress will be made in the recognition of the national identity and the rights of ethnic and religious minorities.
Ter-Matevosyan also noted that the legislative changes may also resolve a set of problems faced by Armenia’s citizens living in Turkey illegally. -0-
