YEREVAN, July 28. /ARKA/. The Nagorno-Karabakh issue, the issue of delimitation and demarcation of the border between Armenia and Azerbaijan should be resolved only through negotiations as any other alternative will lead to a dead end, French Ambassador to Armenia Jonathan Lacôte said at a press conference on Wednesday.

In May, Armenia’s Acting Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan asked French President Emmanuel Macron for assistance in resolving the situation on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border. Macron said that given a UN mandate, if necessary, France was ready to provide military assistance as part of international efforts to regulate the situation.

"France is ready to consider Armenia’s assistance applications that may be sent, but it is also necessary to consider the general context - Armenia and France are in various military alliances (Armenia in the Russia-led Collective Security Treaty Origination and France in NATO) and in general our goal is not to prepare for a future war, but to avoid a war or conflict, since we believe that problems in the region should not have a forceful solution," Jonathan Lacôte said.

As for the possible visit of the French President to Armenia, the ambassador noted that during the Francophonie Forum in 2018 in Yerevan, Macron promised to visit Yerevan as part of a bilateral visit.

"There are no specific dates for the visit yet. The President will pay a visit when it is beneficial for promoting political processes in the region, and it will be clear what kind of documents on cooperation can be signed between Armenia and France," Jonathan Lacôte said.

According to the Armenian Defense Ministry, on July 28, at about 03:40 am, Azerbaijani troops attacked Armenian positions located in the northeastern section of the Armenian-Azerbaijani border from Sotk to Verin Shorzha (Gegharkunik province) in an attempt to improve their strongpoints to create favorable conditions for advance.

‘The Armenian Armed Forces defend their positions, preventing the enemy from advancing. As of 08:30 Wednesday, the Armenian side had three killed servicemen and two more servicemen were wounded,’ the ministry said.

The latest clash between Armenian and Azerbaijani troops is the most serious armed incident in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict zone since last autumn’s 44-day war stopped by a Russian-brokered ceasefire. -0-
