Armenia allocates additional space for Russian air squadron at Eebuni airfield in Yerevan

A spokesman for Armenia’s defense ministry has confirmed today that Armenia will allocate additional space to a Russian air squadron deployed at Erebuni airfield in Yerevan. The spokesman, Artsrun Hovhanesyan said the Russian air squadron needs additional space to upgrade the facility.
YEREVAN, November 22. / ARKA /. A spokesman for Armenia’s defense ministry has confirmed today that Armenia will allocate additional space to a Russian air squadron deployed at Erebuni airfield in Yerevan. The spokesman, Artsrun Hovhanesyan said the Russian air squadron needs additional space to upgrade the facility.
He added that the new space will be used by the air squadron as a helipad, for administrative purposes and for a fuel and lubricants depot. He said the Armenian government has approved a relating agreement with Russia.
Artsrun Hovhanesyan said under the agreement the Erebuni airfield’s runway will be used both by Armenian and Russian sides.
The agreement on handing additional space at Erebuni aerodrome to the Russian air squadron was adopted a meeting of the Armenian-Russian task force in Yerevan.
The air squadron is part of the 102nd Russian military base deployed in Armenia’s second largest town of Gyumri, the administrative center of northwestern region of Shirak bordering with Turkey.
The air squadron is also of the united CIS air-defense system. It is equipped with MIG-29 fighters and S-300 air defense systems. In 2010 Armenia and Russia signed an agreement to extend the lease of the base by Russia until 2044. -0-
