YEREVAN, September 27. /ARKA/. Armenia has applied to the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) for the defense of ex-Nagorno-Karabakh State Minister Ruben Vardanyan, detained today by Azerbaijan, Asmik Samvelyan, spokeswoman for the office of Armenia's representative on international legal issues, told Novosti-Armenia news agency.

"The Armenian side demands that Baku provide information on Ruben Vardanyan's condition and whereabouts," Samvelyan said.

Vardanyan, a billionaire businessman, who made his fortune in Russia, was detained when trying to cross into Armenia through the Lachin corridor along with other ethnic Armenians leaving the region following the September 19 Azerbaijani military attack. His arrest was confirmed by Azerbaijan's border service.

Vardanyan renounced his Russian citizenship and moved to Nagorno-Karabakh in 2022 and headed the regional government for several months before leaving earlier this year.

Ruben Vardanyan's wife Veronika Zonabend issued a statement today saying that ‘her husband, Ruben Vardanyan, philanthropist, businessman and former minister of state of Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh), has been arrested and held captive by the Azerbaijani authorities at the border as he attempted to leave this morning, along with thousands of Armenians escaping Azerbaijani occupation. Ruben stood with the Arsakh people during the 10-month blockade and suffered along with them in the struggle for survival. I ask for your prayers and support to ensure my husband’s safe release.” -0-
