Armenia appoints ambassador to Hungary after a long hiatus in diplomatic relations

YEREVAN, May 22. /ARKA/. Armenian Ambassador to Georgia Ashot Smbatyan will also serve as Armenian Ambassador to Hungary (with residence in Tbilisi, Georgia). Armenian President Vahagn Khachaturyan signed the corresponding decree on Friday.
On May 16, Hungarian Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Armenia Anna Maria Siko (residence in Tbilisi) presented his credentials to President Vahagn Khachaturyan.
Armenia broke diplomatic relations with Hungary in 2012 after Budapest extradited to Azerbaijan Ramil Safarov, who was sentenced to life imprisonment in Hungary for the murder of Armenian officer Gurgen Margaryan.
Safarov murdered Gurgen Margaryan with an axe while he was sleeping. Both were in Budapest to take part in a NATO Partnership for Peace program.
Hungary agreed to transfer Safarov to serve the remainder of his sentence in Azerbaijan, however, . Safarov was instead issued a pardon by Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev on his return.
On December 1, 2022 Armenian and Hungarian Foreign Ministers Ararat Mirzoyan and Péter Szijjártó agreed to restore full diplomatic relations. As a follow-up to the meeting, the two governments were to appoint non-resident ambassadors to explore possibilities for developing relations. -0-
