YEREVAN, May 29. /ARKA/. Armenia’s decision to join the Eurasian Economic Union (EEU) was contextual, well-known Russian political analyst and head of regional studies and foreign policy at the Russian State Humanitarian University Sergey Markedonov said on Sputnik-Armenia radio channel.
“Of course, there was the Russian factor and there was pressure, we understand it, and it would be silly to deny it. But there were lots of other factors as well,” the analyst said, as cited by Novosti-Armenia.
As an example Markedonov referred to the Syrian case where Putin’s initiate was not implemented yet at the time and Turkey’s interference in Syrian affairs was quite obvious and realistic.
“There was a risk for Armenia, and, apparently, Russia and its integration projects provided some guarantees to Armenia,” Markedonov said.
“Moscow has its interests; it is politics and there is no room left for altruistic love there. There is an interest, there is pressure, but there are also other factors that we have no right to overlook,” the analyst said.
The EEU is an international economic union established on January 1, 2015, based on Russia-led Customs Union. The current member states are Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan and Russia. Kyrgyzstan is expected to join the EEU in May. –0--
