YEREVAN, June 21. /ARKA/. After the June 20 meeting of presidents of Armenia, Russia and Azerbaijan in St. Petersburg, where the presidents of Armenia and Azerbaijan agreed to increase the number of international observers in the Karabakh conflict zone and noted the achievement of mutual understanding on a number of issues that will create conditions for progress in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict settlement process, the official Moscow will be more interested and consistent in preventing   resumption of hostilities in the conflict zone, a  political scientist Hrant Melik-Shahnazaryan said today.

"First of all, after mediating an end of unprecedented violence along the line of contact in Nagorno-Karabakh in early April Russia is playing now a peacemaker that has the potential to prevent the resumption of war. Russia’s involvement in the Karabakh settlement process is at the highest level,’ Melik-Shahnazaryan said.

According to the analyst, it is a question of Moscow’s international prestige, because resumption of hostilities would become a blow to Russia’s prestige not only in the region but on a global scale.

"Parties to the negotiations always pursue their goals and now for Russia it is very important to become a more significant factor in the South Caucasus with even stronger capabilities and not only in the context of the Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict, but also in other areas," he said.

"It is obvious that Putin did not want to make any public statements about the June 20 meeting. This was followed by an interview with Lavrov, in which he presented the point of view of official Moscow that focused on  security on the border only and decisions that can enhance the security,’  he said. -0-
