YEREVAN, September 24. /ARKA/. The foreign ministers of Armenia and Azerbaijan Edward Nalbandyan and Elmar Mamediarov discussed with the co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group the preparations for the upcoming meeting of the two presidents, the press office of the Armenian president reports.
The presidential meeting will be held in Paris initiated by France’s president François Hollande.
Armenia’s foreign minister Edward Nalbandyan participating in the 69th UN General Assembly session met with the OSCE Minsk Group Co-Chairs Igor Popov (Russia), Pierre Andrio (France) and James Warlick (USA), as well as with the personal representative of OSCE Chairman-in-Office Andjey Kasprship on Tuesday. Later, Azerbaijani foreign minister Elmar Mamediarov joined the meeting.
The ministers and the mediators discussed the Karabakh peace process. The Co-Chairs once again re-affirmed their commitment toward exclusively peaceful settlement.
The Co-Chairs said they plan to visit the region in October.
The Karabakh conflict started in 1988 when prevailingly Armenian population of Nagorno-Karabakh declared withdrawal from Azerbaijan. On December 10, 1991, a referendum was held in Nagorno-Karabakh where 99.89% voted for independence from Azerbaijan.
Azerbaijan responded by large-scale military operations that led to loss of control not only over Nagorno-Karabakh itself, but also over seven adjoining areas. About 25-30 thousand people were killed and about a million had to leave their homes during the military operations.
A trilateral cease-fire agreement was signed on May 12, 2004, and has been followed since then.
The ongoing Karabakh peace process started in 1992 under auspices of OSCE Minsk Group co-chaired by the USA, Russia and France. –0--
