YEREVAN, September 18. /ARKA/. Armenia’s Central Election Commission (CEC) convened today for an extraordinary meeting to review the preliminary results of the September 17 elections to the Yerevan Council of Elders (municipal assembly).

CEC head Vahagn Hovakimyan said that out of a total of 824,316 eligible voters in Yerevan only 234,436 people took part in the elections (28.44% voter turnout).

The Yerevan Council of Elders consists of 65 members and elects a mayor for a 5-year term. The threshold for the parties to win seats is 4% s and 6% for party blocs.

The parties and the bloc, which have been able to pass the threshold are Public Voice - 22,431 votes (9.68%), Civil Contract - 75,463 votes (32.57%), National Progress - 43,765 votes (18.89%), Hanrapetutyun (Republic) - 26,236 votes (11.32%) and Mother Armenia bloc - 35,739 votes (15.43%). The number of spoiled ballots - 2,763.

To nominate a candidate for the post of mayor a party or a bloc should control at least 33 seats in the assembly.

The CEC said it will be accepting applications for the recount of votes on September 18 from 12:00 to 18:00 and on September 19 from 9:00 to 11:00.

The outgoing Council of Elders was elected in September 2018. PM Pashinyan’s supporters hold 57 seats in it. Its term will expire on October 10, 2023. -0-
