YEREVAN, December 8. /ARKA/. Vigen Sargsyan, Armenian defense minister, is opposed to exemption of draft dodgers from prosecution, but he agrees to extend the term of the law validity.
Speaking Wednesday at a Q&A session in the National Assembly, he said that as a minister, he thinks everybody ought to do his military service, not to pay money to be exempted from it, but at the same time, as a citizen, he respect government’s decisions.
The Armenian National Assembly every year amends the law on citizens who dodged their military service.
The last amendments, passed on April 30, 2015, imply to stop prosecuting those citizens who turned 27 before December 31, 2014.
The law applies to those citizens who left Armenia at a young age and lived abroad. It gives them an opportunity to return home exempting them from military service for money.
According to the Diaspora ministry, 954 people paid certain amounts in 2014 and 61 people in the first quarter of 2015 for legal exemption from military service.
The validity of the amended law has repeatedly extended. As a result AMD 800 million has been sent to the special governmental account and 900 young men at the age above 27 have returned to their homeland.
The maximum size of the fine is AMD 1.8 million. --0----
